The new 43,000-square-metre cargo handling centre equipped with two automatic storage systems for airfreight and for entire aircraft freight containers (Stacker) opened at Zurich Airport in 1999.
The construction over the existing cargo building takes place during ongoing operation and places high demands on the logistics.
The proximity and position of the building to the radar, which monitors the entire flight movements in the area of the airport, caused problems with flight safety. Countermeasures had to be taken, to avoid strong reflections through the façade. Likewise, disturbances of the instrument landing system (ILS) were to be avoided by structural measures. Thus the detailed design of the facade was carried out in intensive cooperation with specialist planners and contractors./p>
